I welcome students who are genuinely excited about intelligent transportation and AI and who want to solve real, complex problems with rigorous methods.
For Fall 2027, the group plans to recruit one Ph.D. student and one master's student.
Undergraduate researchers and research assistants are also welcome to contact the group and become involved early. Openings and requirements are subject to official ZJU and college announcements.
Research areas
- Connected and automated transportation: traffic-state estimation, traffic-flow modeling, and cooperative vehicle–infrastructure control.
- AI-enabled transportation systems: machine learning, reinforcement learning, and foundation models for modeling, prediction, and decision-making.
- Traffic simulation and optimization control: from signal timing to large-scale road networks and low-altitude transportation.
Preparation that matters
No particular undergraduate major is required; rigorous problem-solving ability and motivation matter more.
- Mathematical foundations: probability, statistics, linear algebra, mathematical modeling, optimization, or control.
- Programming: Python or similar tools for data processing, algorithm implementation, and reproducible experiments, together with a willingness to improve code quality.
- Methodological interests: data science, artificial intelligence, operations research, optimization, or optimal control applied to real systems.
- Research qualities: curiosity, integrity, and patience, with interest in both theory and hands-on work with data, code, and system validation.
Mentoring philosophy
Close guidance toward independence
Early group members will receive close attention. We will first build systematic foundations in research methods, mathematical and computational tools, and academic communication, then move toward independently identifying and pursuing meaningful questions.
Theory, practice, and diverse paths
Our work ranges from foundational methods to real data, engineering systems, and field deployment. I support different paths toward academia or industry and encourage conferences, research visits, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
A warm, supportive, and open group
Regular group meetings, paper discussions, and one-on-one conversations will help address problems early. I respect different growth trajectories and hope the group will be a place where people support one another as well as do excellent research.
International students
International applicants are especially encouraged to contact me. Research discussions, writing, and day-to-day supervision can be conducted fully in English. Admission, scholarships, language of instruction, and application materials are subject to the official guide for each cycle.
